Men’s update.

Overall our men’s Teams have enjoyed a very successful 2019 and huge thanks must go to the Team manager’s and the panels of players who opted in to playing, practicing hard and giving their all wearing the navy and white to represent Naas Golf Club with pride. A big thanks also to all those members who supported at matches, by twitter and by text.

After so many matches, just 1 team is left standing – that pride of place goes to our Straffan Cup team led out by Willie McNelis, who will play The Grange Golf Club on Friday 27th September on the Smurfit Course at the K Club

Well done lads and looking forward to the final.

Beaten Finalists:

Super Seniors:
This super Naas team has made it to the final in Elm Park on Tuesday 30th July and took on Stackstown GC, beaten finalists in 2 of the last 3 years. Ultimately, Stackstown were the stronger on the day, but what a run by Seamus Rohan’s team. They completed the 4 group stage matches, then beat Charlesland in the Q/F, and Old Conna in the S/F, winning 2 matches on 18 and another on 19 showing nerves of steel!

Jimmy Bruen:
Dermot P Griffin’s team qualified in June in Citywest out of 19 teams, and in reaching the Leinster Final, had further wins over Killeen, Cill Dara, Tullamore and Wexford. Last Saturday afternoon they met The Island in the Leinster Final and went down narrowly. Tied at a match each, 3 matches headed up the 18th but it was not to be, the ball didn’t bounce and the Blue Pennant went to the seaside club. So close! Every success to The Island in the All-Irelands in Westport in September.

Winners Corner:

Kildare Mixed Foresomes Shield:
Played in great conditions on Monday June 10th – the Naas Team delivered the goods to win on home turf. Team as follows:

Brian Cagney & Cait Harrington, John Grogan & Hilary Morrissey, Dermot P Griffin and Marie Cullen, Vincent Shelly and Eimear Lenehan.

Journey’s end!

Central Towns:
Following a tight one against Millicent, Naas lost to Palmerstown House on Sunday June 30th on the 21st hole with the match tied 2-2. Great team effort and well done Kevin Redmond, team manager.

All-Ireland Fourball:
Having accounted for Newbridge GC and Mount Wolseley, Naas came unstuck against Waterford GC. Well played and well managed by Noel O’Connor.

Senior Cup:
Naas qualified at the Smurfit Course on Sunday 23rd in 3rd place and then beat Mullingar in the 1st round of match-play, before losing out to Carton House. Good achievement and well done to John F Dunne and Gavin Lunny.

Duggan Cup:
Following a great win against Birr, Naas come up 1 short against Royal Curragh on the wettest Sunday of the summer so far. Despite taking an away match, Naas lost 2 at home and a great run comes to an end. Well done to Johnny Fearon and a panel who put a lot of hard work and effort in.

South Leinster Trophy:
Naas won all 3 matches at home against Esker Hills and with 4 away matches, it all came down to the final match. This one went all the way to the 21st green where agonisingly, Esker Hills holed a winning putt to knock Naas out. This has been a great run and so close in the end – hard lines to Mick Murphy and the team.

Fred Daly:
This young team has had a super campaign and took on Royal Dublin in a Q-final match that was interrupted by a cloudburst at a point when everything was at stake. Naas had won 1 away match convincingly and were tied 2-2 with 1 match alive when the monsoon came. Level after 18 and 19, Royal Dublin won the match on 20th hole in the tightest of finishes.

Junior Cup:
Naas came through in 2nd place out of 19 teams at Regional qualifying in Athy on Saturday 8th and into the match-play stage where they played Dunmurry Springs. Unfortunately it was not to be and the journey ended there with a 3-2 loss. Well done to Gus Fitzpatrick, Gerry Prendergast and the panel for effort and commitment to this competition.

Barton Shield:
Regional qualifying in Millicent saw Naas qualify from strokeplay in 7th place and a match against a strong Carton House next morning. Carton’s team had a combined handicap of +10 and Naas eventually went down on 17th hole. Hard luck but also well done John Dunne and panel.

Pierce Purcell:
Hard luck to Kevin Whelan and team who gave it everything at regional qualifying in Castlewarden and missed out by just a few shots in the end.

Metropolitan Cup:
Winners in Round 1 against Lisheen Springs, we came unstuck against Palmerstown House who won 3 of the 5 matches played in Naas, and 2 away. Hard luck to the Team and Managers, Marty McDonald and Dave Prendergast.

Barton Cup:
Plenty of commitment and practice from the panel and after a good 1st round win, Naas lost to near neighbours Craddockstown GC.  Strong panel of players and well managed by Paddy Kavanagh, not to be on the day.

Irish Mixed Foursomes:
Having come through round 1, Naas met a good Blessington Lakes team and failed to take an away match going down 3/2. Great effort by the panel and Conor & Kate Holmes.

Fred Perry Fourball:
Tough away drawn against Lucan and while taking our 2 home games, Lucan won their 3 at home. A good performance all round.
